Meet Ed
Lifelong Tauntonian
Born and raised in Taunton, Ed acquired his values from his mother, Blanche. She instilled in him that the sky is the limit if you work hard together. This prepared him for success in his business life.
Built Successful Businesses
Ed has spent more than 40 years building his family’s businesses, which include an insurance agency, a hardware store, a plumbing and heating business, and numerous income-producing apartments. Following in his footsteps, a new generation of Correiras now lead the companies.
Let's Work Together!
Ed's tireless work ethic, vast business experience, and dedication to helping people will guide him as mayor. He will bring us together to create opportunities to draw new businesses to our great city.

Meet Ed Correira

Ed Correira’s hard work ethic, vast business experience, and dedication to helping people will guide him as Taunton’s mayor. He will insist that we all work together tirelessly to create real opportunities for Taunton’s citizens while drawing new residents and businesses to our city to be part of our success. At age seven, Ed started to work delivering newspapers with his older brother John to help support themselves and their family. The Correira boys were poor, but they didn’t know it because their mother, a Raytheon worker, taught them the value of hard work and seizing opportunities when they arose. Ed and his brother John also realized that if they worked hard and brought people together to solve problems, they would get things done.In the summers, Ed and John reported to the unemployment office to work on local farms. During high school, Ed worked seven days a week after school, weekends, and summers at a chicken farm and at a local restaurant, washing dishes and eventually cooking to support himself and pay his high school tuition at Coyle High School. From there, he paid his way through Miami-Dade Community College, studying hotel and restaurant management. After active duty in the United States Navy, Ed majored in Psychology and Business at Florida International University while serving as a naval reservist. After a period of time living and working in heavy construction in Colorado and Washington, Ed returned home with his young family to reunite with his brother John on a new business venture - selling insurance. Ed and John worked together at MetLife, then worked within another agency with the goal of becoming partners. In 1978, Ed and John branched out on their own and founded Correira Insurance, which is currently managed by Ed’s son, Luke.In 1982, in the midst of a deep recession and crushing interest rates, business prospects were tough, and skyrocketing interest rates put Correira’s rental business in jeopardy. Instead of turning in their keys and giving up, like numerous other landlords were doing, Ed got to work. When some see despair, Ed finds opportunity. Ed was able to put together numerous deals to purchase apartment buildings in Taunton that not only kept the Correiras in the rental business but kept those properties whole and in great shape for tenants. Today, they own numerous apartment units in Taunton, charging some of the lowest rents in the city. Ed knows that we need more affordable senior and veteran housing in our city.As Correira Insurance needs created Correira Properties, the maintenance needs of the apartments led to the acquisition of an almost foreclosed Whittenton Hardware in 1995 and the establishment of Anytime Plumbing and Heating in 1998. Ed even worked to earn his Master Plumber’s Licence. Today, Whittenton Hardware is a very successful hardware store led by Ed’s son, Colby, and Anytime Plumbing and Heating is led by Ed’s partner, Fred.During this time, Ed was involved in helping others in public service. As a member and leader of many civic organizations in the city, Ed also came to know many political leaders and involved himself in campaigns. That eventually led to him being appointed Chief of Staff by the Mayor when she assumed office in 2020.As Chief of Staff, Ed brought his experience as a can-do problem solver who can find opportunities in even the most difficult situations. However, the key ingredient to Taunton’s success was to bring people together and collectively keep everyone accountable to produce results. Scores of projects to improve the city were constantly on his docket, and many of them came to fruition, and all have been successful.Due to a different course of action with the administration, Ed made the heartfelt decision to vacate his position as Chief of Staff, but his heart always remained with his beloved city. He still had goals for Taunton to achieve. Ed may not have held a paid position at city hall any longer, but he never stopped working tirelessly toward Taunton’s growth and prosperity. As our Mayor, Ed Correira will raise the bar significantly at city hall, where a positive, collaborative, can-do attitude will be required. Taunton is a city filled with many talented and dedicated individuals from all walks of life, and a Correira Administration will recruit that talent to work together and achieve big things for our city. As Ed’s mother always said, “The sky is the limit if you work hard together.”

KEEPING TAUNTON SAFE
It’s time to bring back community policing!
Community-oriented policing in small areas such as Whittenton, the Weir, and downtown addressed specific public safety issues such as crime and social issues such as neighborhood watch meetings, neighborhood events, and community forums.
Community Policing provided a forum where the residents of specific areas could voice their concerns and engaged residents to determine which criminal activities they were most affected by creating an accurate law enforcement priority list shaped by the people who live in the area. It also gives people a sense of security knowing and seeing a police officer in their area.
Provide Necessary Resources
Ed is committed to working with law enforcement to make sure they have the necessary resources to keep our police and our community safe.
More than giving Law Enforcement new cruisers, making sure that the fleet is up to date and safe.
Making sure that officers have the means to address school safety concerns.
Give the police officers safety equipment, keeping them safe so they can, in turn, keep the public safe.
Ed supports the creation of a new Public Safety Building. Police and Fire have worked in substandard buildings for years (for the police, more than 40 years). The public deserves a facility where they can interface with both and feel comfortable.
Shift the funding from the executive branch's EXCESSIVE job creation over the last 4 years and Increase funding to employ more police officers.
There is a significant need for road safety through traffic education and enforcement. The department is understaffed and unable to have a traffic division to address this need.
The choice is clear!
Ed supports our POLICE!

Statement on the Proposed Gasification Plant
When I was Chief of Staff, one of my jobs was to look for new and innovative companies willing to locate in Taunton, and the Gasification Plant was one such business. My number one priority then, as it is now, was not revenue, but rather the health and safety of Taunton residents. To me, if the plant could not operate safely, then it would not operate in Taunton.
That plant has had 3 years to make its case on safety and has failed to do so. Consequently, as your Mayor, I will tell them what I’m telling you now: I will not welcome ANY business that is not totally safe for our residents, EVER!
The choice is clear!
Ed supports our Safety First

I will embrace a Right to Farm Community
Another cornerstone of my campaign is the establishment of a "Right to Farm" community here in Taunton, much like other communities in Massachusetts. Agriculture has always been an integral part of our city, especially East Taunton, and it is time we embrace and protect our farming traditions. As Mayor, I will champion, along with the agriculture commission and the city council, the creation of a "Right to Farm" community in Taunton, ensuring that our local farmers have the support and protection they need to thrive. This initiative will provide a framework that recognizes and respects the vital role that agriculture plays in our economy, environment, and community. We can make this happen by preserving farmland, and we must work diligently to preserve our precious farmland from encroaching development. I will collaborate with local land trusts, conservation organizations, and state agencies to secure funding and implement policies that protect our agricultural lands from being lost forever. We need to support local farmers. Our farmers are an important part of our community, and they deserve our unwavering support. I will establish programs and initiatives that provide financial assistance, technical expertise, and marketing opportunities to help our farmers thrive in a competitive market. Some examples are farmers' markets, wine vineyards, pick-your-own orchards, Christmas tree farms, and farm-to-table. I will also look into partnering with our schools and local restaurants. By promoting local agriculture, we can strengthen our local economy and foster a sense of pride in our community. Right to farm also protects our open space and our environment.Fostering community engagement and a "Right to Farm" community is not just about policies; it is about fostering a sense of community and appreciation for our agricultural heritage. I will organize events, workshops, and educational programs that bring together farmers, residents, and local businesses. By creating opportunities for dialogue and collaboration, we can strengthen the bond between our farmers and the wider community.Working Together, we can build a Taunton that embraces its agricultural roots, supports our local farmers, and ensures a sustainable future for generations to come.
